Anna Erickson Presents

November 28—December 3, 2022

Miami, FL

Anna Erickson Presents is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new paintings by Gwen O'Neil at Untitled Art Miami 2022, taking place November 28 - December 3, 2022.

Gwen O’Neil is an abstract painter based in Los Angeles whose work invokes the rhythms of the natural world. During this past summer, O’Neil returned to her family’s home on Long Island, not far from the Pollock-Krasner House, to create a new body of work for Untitled. O’Neil’s practice continues in the tradition of Krasner, Frankenthaler and Elaine de Kooning who found creative freedom in the warm watered light and sea air of Eastern Long Island.

In her paintings, O’Neil layers stippled brushstrokes in spiraling waves of color. Her palette is reminiscent of the fauvists and post impressionists with inspiration drawn from the coastal beauty of California and Long Island.

O’Neil’s compositions can be read as cosmic diagrams, ethereal particles coalescing in atmospheric gradients, but their origins are far more earthly and humble: maps of LA’s back-canyon roads, migrating birds and spiraling eddies. There are patterns hidden in these forms, algorithms programmed into the natural world. The phenomenon of Starling murmurations mirrors the ebb and flow of energy that resonates across O’Neil’s work. Despite their cascading waves and whirlpools of color, O’Neil’s work induces a feeling of serenity. Her work is a visual oasis, a respite from the digital overload of modern life, and a manifestation of nature’s underlying design. “My concern for the environment has intensified my interest in nature.”

At Untitled Art Miami, Anna Erickson Presents will feature three new series of work by O’Neil, known as Field Paintings, Open Paintings, and Spiral Paintings, respectively. These series make use of distinguishing formal elements, each rendered in O’Neil’s signature abstract style.

Gwen O’Neil was born in New York City and is currently based in LA. She earned her BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2015. Her work has been shown in Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Seoul, and Milan. For more information or to preview available works, please contact Anna Erickson.
